Wedding Guitarist Blog: my top 10 most requested songs for the wedding ceremony/first dance - and some alternative choices

Choosing the music you want at your wedding is a tricky thing! Making your own song selections is the norm now, particularly at civil ceremonies but also at more traditional church weddings. While the bride may opt to enter the ceremony to the traditional Bridal Chorus performed by an organist, there is still usually space for some music before the ceremony, during the signing of the register, and as the married couple exit.

As a live guitarist and singer, I'm often booked to perform at the wedding ceremony. When I meet with couples to discuss the music, I'd say 90% of couples aren't sure what music they want - so if you're planning your wedding and scratching your head, wondering what on earth you should choose - don't despair! You're in the majority.

A question that crops up time and time again when I speak to couples is "what songs have other people chosen?" This can good be a good starting point if you have no idea which songs to pick. It may be also a good guide as to which songs you don't want! Eliminating the most popular songs may be a good idea if you want something more unusual. You may stumble across a gem of a song that fits perfectly. Look out for my next blog: Top 10 most unusual wedding ceremony/first dance songs I've played. The perfect song for the ceremony or first dance will ideally be one that:

• you both like (although the bride will usually have the final word when it comes to her entrance music!)
• sets the atmosphere you're looking for (romantic? upbeat?)
• has lyrics that are meaningful to you
• reminds you of a significant moment in your relationship

If you manage to find a song that fills all the above criteria - well done! Realistically it's pretty difficult to find one that ticks all boxes, so if you find one that fulfils two out of four, you're onto a winner.

#10 - Thinking Out Loud by Ed Sheeran

Only released two years ago, this song became an instant wedding favourite with it's beautiful lyrics and classic melodies. Ed's soulful voice and skilful songwriting come to the fore on this track, and I'm certain it'll be a popular choice for years to come.

#9 - Let's Stay Together by Al Green

Heartfelt, soulful, timeless - this song is a popular pick, with lyrics that perfectly express what the wedding day is all about. From the first line "I, I'm so in love with you" to the chorus "Loving you whether times are good or bad, happy or sad" - it's almost like all your wedding vows wrapped up in a neat musical package!

#8 - A Thousand Years by Christina Perri

Another modern song to make the top 10 list, this has been one of my most requested at wedding ceremonies over the last couple of years. The soaring chorus melody and beautiful lyrics make this a firm favourite with the hopeless romantics!

#7 - Here Comes The Sun by The Beatles

Uplifting and positive, this is a lovely song to have at any point during the wedding ceremony. Works perfectly for the bridal entrance, during the signing of the register or the exit of the married couple. However if you're superstitious and hoping for a sunny day, you may not want to choose this and jinx the weather!

This is the perfect song for the wedding ceremony exit - upbeat, joyful and the perfect confirmation song that you're officially a married couple! Also works really well as a first dance song if you want something to get the party started rather than a slow dance - although be warned, you may have to bust out some dance moves in front of your wedding guests!

A little while back I made a recording of this song in a modern acoustic style, and it seemed to instantly connect with people - quickly becoming far and away my most popular video on YouTube with well over 100,000 views to date. Heartfelt and timeless, there's just something about the melodies in this song that touch the soul. It seems amazing to me that this song was released in 2008 - it's nearly 10 years old! It still feels fresh as ever and remains a very popular pick at weddings. "I'm Yours" - the perfect sentiment, what more do you need to say?!

So, we move into the top 3 with this classic soul track. Recorded in the early 60's, this song remains as popular today as ever - it's one of those tunes where everyone knows the chorus lyrics, no matter their age! A genius moment in songwriting history, and Ben E. King's incredible soulful vocals are the icing on the cake. Another great song for the recessional (exit song) at the wedding ceremony.

Jack Johnson's chilled out voice, laid-back guitar style and knack for writing interesting/unusual but universally appealing lyrics all contribute to this modern classic. "It's always better when we're together" - of course it is, that's why you're getting married! It's one of my favourite songs to play at weddings - a genius piece of songwriting, and one that will continue to be popular for years to come I'm sure.

#1 - (Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher & Higher by Jackie Wilson

And the no.1 goes to the brilliant Jackie Wilson! This song has all the elements to make it the perfect wedding song - it works brilliantly at the ceremony, or as a funky upbeat first dance song. Jackie Wilson's soaring voice and the infectious energy in the song is perfect to get everyone feeling upbeat and happy. I think it's popularity at weddings is also down to the fact that it's not necessarily as well known as some of the other songs on the list, so while it's a familiar song to hear, it doesn't feel tired or overplayed. It's one of my favourite songs to play at weddings!

Laura & Chris: The Manor House, Castle Combe. Wedding Guitarist & Singer - Ceremony + Drinks Reception

 

Sunday 24th May, and a relatively short journey from my home in East Bristol over to the picture-perfect village of Castle Combe. This little gem in the Cotswolds has been described as "The prettiest village in England" - and as you arrive it's hard not to pull over and take a few photos! Which, of course, I did!


An incredible place to get married, and as you enter the Manor House Castle Combe the grounds of the venue are just as stunning...

 
So a beautiful setting for Chris and Laura's big day. The happy couple booked me for the wedding ceremony + reception package. The morning brought some light rain, so I set up inside ready to play at the ceremony. After playing some background music as guests assembled, Laura made her entrance to an instrumental version of "Let Her Go" by Passenger.

During the signing of the register I played "Won't Let You Go" by James Morrison, and an instrumental version of "The Woman I Love" by Jason Mraz. The happy couple exited the ceremony to the ever-popular "Higher & Higher" by Jackie Wilson. The weather cheered up in the afternoon - so a quick change of plan, and I did some rushing around to move my equipment out to the front of the building where the drinks reception took place.

Nicola & Ryan: The Grange Hotel, Winterbourne, Bristol North – Drinks reception live acoustic music

After yesterday's road trip to Cornwall, today's wedding was a much more local affair! A short 20 minute journey North to The Mercure Grange Hotel in Winterbourne, Bristol for Nicola and Ryan's big day. The happy couple booked me to play during the break between the ceremony and the wedding breakfast.

Despite a chilly wind (good old British Summer!), we managed to hold the drinks reception outdoors in the beautiful grounds of the hotel. The rain held off thankfully, and the photographer made the most of the beautiful surroundings, getting some great group shots and pictures of the happy couple. Meanwhile, I serenaded the wedding party with some acoustic covers picked by the newlyweds.

Nicola & Ryan picked a bang up-to-date playlist, including songs from Ed Sheeran, George Ezra, One Direction and John Legend. This was mixed in with some classics such as Fast Car by Tracey Chapman and Higher & Higher by Jackie Wilson. I captured some of the set on film so will get this onto the YouTube page soon!

A great afternoon and the music seemed to go down well! I spotted the bride dancing away to "What Makes You Beautiful" while having photographs taken :-) And I managed to squeeze in a request for the lads. Wedding Guitarist Blog: Common mistakes made when booking a live musician

As a follow-on from my last blog piece about live wedding music, I've also put together a few thoughts on what tends to work less effectively, in my experience:

• Too much music! I've had plenty of emails in the past along the lines of "we'd like you to play at the church, then the drinks reception for a couple of hours, then we want you to play background music during the meal, then if you could do a couple of hours before the DJ starts". When you're booking a musician, you want value for money for sure - but as a solo performer, this is physically impossible! It would amount to 5 or 6 hours of almost constant singing/playing - and if I had any voice left by that point, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be able to feel my fingers!

• The wedding breakfast. Now this is my personal opinion, but I don't think there's any need to have a live musician during the wedding breakfast. A pianist or classical guitarist may provide some nice atmosphere, but an iPod or playlist will do the same job. During the meal people want to chat to one another, and of course there's usually speeches, so I don't think having a live player adds anything in this instance. That's not to say that it can't be a lovely addition to the big day - I've just found that personally, when I've played during the wedding breakfast, it's been less effective. You could always order one of my CDs if you wanted customised music to play in the background! (had to sneak some self-promotion in there!!)

• Beware of a tight schedule. Now this affects the live music for sure, but also applies to the whole day. If you're the control freak type who wants your day planned to the minute, unfortunately you do have to prepare yourself for unexpected situations which could delay the day. Try not to cram too much into a short space of time. You may have to look really closely at your timings, and allow for some leeway, especially if your ceremony is starting later in the day. Speeches usually take longer than you expect... the bride is often not on time for the ceremony... the photographs invariably take longer than you'd imagine. Your venue or wedding co-ordinator, if you have one, will usually guide you. If they take a sharp intake of breath and say "ooh, it's a bit tight", they're probably right. It only takes one of the waiting staff to go off sick, or a problem in the kitchen, and all of a sudden you're behind schedule, which can be a huge problem if you're left no wiggle room. I'd say at least 80% of the weddings I play at run behind schedule! One wedding I played at ran 3 hours behind schedule due to one thing and another - yikes!

• Try to avoid live music playing while food is served in the evening. This follows on from the last point, in a way. If the schedule is very tight and something runs late, this may be unavoidable. However, this is something I always try to advise people when booking for the evening. If you have a buffet, hog roast, pizza oven - whatever - arriving in the evening, try to make sure the band or live musician isn't playing because of course, the dance floor will empty as soon as food arrives. If I'm booked for an evening, I'll usually play my 2 x 1 hour sets after the evening food is done - or, I'll play one set before the food arrives, have a break during, and then resume after people have eaten. There's nothing worse for the bride & groom than booking a band (or someone like me) and having them play to an empty room!

• Does the layout of your venue lend itself to live music? The wedding couple book their dream venue, and fork out on their choice of band or musician, then find that they end up having a largely empty dance floor in the evening. Fortunately this doesn't happen often, but there have been times where I've felt so sorry for the wedding couple because people are just not up on the dance floor in the evening. This is rarely the fault of the band or musician, so how can you avoid this happening? Often the layout of the venue can be a factor. Is the bar in a separate room, away from the area where the musician or band is performing? Often people will gravitate towards the bar (especially the men - come on men - up your game, get on that dance floor!!) and in some cases that's where they'll stay all night. If your venue has multiple rooms or large grounds, that can also be a factor. Just something to bear in mind that I think is often overlooked.

• It's too loud!! In some ways this is part of the previous point. If your venue is on the smaller side, a band may not be suitable. As soon as you introduce live drums and electric guitars, things start getting LOUD. Bear in mind that this may be overwhelming, especially if you have more elderly guests. Of course, at this point I'm going to say that a singer and guitarist like myself is a fantastic alternative! Some venues have sound limiters which will cut the electric supply when the music reaches a certain volume level.

• In the evening, try to pick songs that will appeal to all. As a wedding musician, my repertoire is large and varied because at a wedding you have all tastes and ages. I always let my wedding couples choose the songs they want played, but it's always worth throwing in as many songs as possible that are well-known and will appeal to the majority. It's your day, and of course you should definitely have the final say on what is played, but also have a think about who will be attending. You won't ever be able to please everyone, but as long as the majority are having a good time, you're onto a winner!

Acoustic Guitar at the Vintage Wedding Fayre - Clifton, Bristol

It was wild, wet and windy here in Bristol this morning. Combine that with the fact that I was out gigging until midnight, and that British Summer Time had the nerve to steal an hour of sleep from us, and I must be honest - I didn't fancy getting out of bed when my 8.30am alarm sounded this morning!

However, drag myself from my pit I did, and I had a great day playing acoustic songs for the Bristol Vintage Wedding Fayre at Freemason's Hall. It was lovely to meet lots of brides and grooms-to-be and chat all things wedding music. Lovely to see lots of friendly faces and mingle with fellow wedding suppliers too! That's my last wedding fair of the year (unless I book in any last-minute) - so if you want to catch me singing live, keep an eye on the gigs page :)

Playing live acoustic music at the Wedding Tweet Ups - Goldbrick House, Bristol

Tonight I played some live acoustic music at Goldbrick House, Bristol for the Bristol Wedding Tweet Up. The Tweet Up is an informal get-together arranged by Kirsten aka The Little Wedding Helper for people in the wedding industry. It's a good excuse for us all to get together, have a glass of bubbly, some canapés and a good chinwag!

Goldbrick House is a lovely venue on Park Street in the centre of Bristol. I've played a couple of weddings there before, but never been up on the top level before (the Orangery). It's absolutely beautiful with some great views.

Live acoustic recordings from the Bristol Vintage Wedding Fair

Last Sunday I played some acoustic tunes at the Bristol Vintage Wedding Fair, hosted at the Pavilion, Bristol Zoo Gardens. I recorded some of my set and am just in the process of editing/uploading some live videos from the event. Here's the first one, a cover of George Ezra's "Blame It On Me".

   

 George is a local boy, from right 'ere in Brizzle town! I love his album "Wanted on Voyage" - his voice is amazing and the album's full of upbeat, Summery songs. I'm also looking forward to seeing him live in Bristol this Summer!

Acoustic Halloween!

Had an amazing Halloween night playing at Illusions Magic Bar! My Halloween-themed set list included Soft Cell - Tainted Love, Jamie T - Zombie, Michael Jackson - Thriller, The Ghostbusters theme, Monster by the Automatic, Creep by Radiohead, Superstition by Stevie Wonder and Highway To Hell by AC/DC. I've recently launched www.PatMcIntyre.co.uk as a personal website separate to my wedding music business. On this page, I'll be promoting my own music - once it's recorded! I've been writing and recording both for myself and for others for many years now, and it feels like the time is right to record my best songs and release them as an EP. At the moment I have the songs mostly ready as sketches, but I'm just so busy that I haven't had time to record yet! Hopefully I'll be getting some original material out there around about Spring 2015.

A song I co-wrote has been recently released in China and Taiwan by Asian superstar Amber Ann (kinda like the Taiwanese Cheryl Cole!). A million hits on this video in the first week - nice! You can check out the video here...

Celebrity Spotting!

A quick snap of me and Radio 1's Matt Edmondson - he was a guest at a recent wedding. I'm pleased to report that he danced and sang along to every song I played and gave me some excellent feedback afterwards! He didn't, however, agree to play any of my songs on Radio 1!

Songwriting

Some positive updates from my other musical venture - as well as performing at weddings I write and produce songs for others and collaborate with all sorts of people. Wedding Music Ideas - Acoustic Guitarist and Singer

A quick thought or two on having live music at a wedding...

Being an acoustic guitarist and singer, I know how much a live musician can add to the wedding day. My most common bookings are for the wedding ceremony and the following drinks reception - two parts of the day where live acoustic guitar and vocals just works so beautifully.

Acoustic guitar adds a really personal touch at wedding ceremonies

There are many options for your wedding day if you're looking for live musicians. Maybe you want a string quartet to provide a beautiful rendition of your song at the ceremony. Strings are a lovely accompaniment to a more traditional ceremony.

I've found that my modern style of acoustic guitar has been really popular in recent times. I think a lot of people instantly associate wedding guitarists with classical guitarists - a guy sat in a corner plucking a classical guitar, playing the old standards. My style is totally different... think more Ed Sheeran, Jason Mraz - I sing and play acoustic guitar and I think it really helps set the tone for the wedding day. You can check out some videos here:

When I'm playing at the wedding ceremony, I usually have some specific songs requested by the bride and groom. I can learn most songs on the acoustic guitar (I've not been beaten yet, and I've had some obscure requests!) - and this provides a unique, memorable way of including some live music at the wedding ceremony.

Many people now follow their ceremony with a drinks reception - maybe serving champagne or afternoon tea while guests mingle, and the wedding couple have photographs taken. I think this is when an acoustic guitar set really comes into it's own. It gives guests a focal point, and some entertainment in the afternoon. There's often about an hour - an hour and a half gap between the ceremony and the wedding breakfast, and I love providing some music for people to listen to. It's particularly great in the Summer, outdoors on a warm sunny day.

Of course, the other time at a wedding when live music comes into it's own is at the evening party. I'm sure everyone would love to book a band, but it's not always that easy. There's so many bands out there - of varying quality! And with varying price ranges. You get what you pay for, as a rule, unless you can get a mate's band to do a cheap favour for you. But generally, you're going to need to set aside an absolute minimum of £1000 for a good band to perform on the wedding night.

This is where I come in! Booking me offers a very budget-friendly option, and I guarantee that guests will be entertained, up on the dance floor and singing along. I play out in Bristol most Friday and Saturday nights when I'm not booked for weddings, so I know exactly what songs to play to get the crowd up on their feet. From old classics like the Beatles and Van Morrisson through to modern artists like Bastille, Ed Sheeran and Jessie J, my repertoire is large and varied.

Public Appearance at Clifton Arcade

Tomorrow I'll be playing some fun, upbeat summery acoustic tunes at the beautiful Clifton Arcade centre. Dating back to 1878, Clifton Arcade is a unique and beautiful shopping little centre full of charm and character, right in the heart of Clifton Village. From 2pm-ish, I'll be playing an hour or two of acoustic songs, so if you're nearby then why not pop down and say hi!
